I have not interviewed or job searched in over 10 years. When I accepted the job offer with my present construction employer, I was 3 classes away from completing a bachelor’s program. I alluded to this on my resume but actually never finished the program. I am now in the process of being promoted to a position that requires an advanced degree. I am not sure as to what I should do- continue with the lie, risk being fired, get passed over for the promotion or come clean.

Interviewing & Job Hunting Questions

I have not interviewed or job searched in over 10 years. When I accepted the job offer with my present construction employer, I was 3 classes away from completing a bachelor’s program. I alluded to this on my resume but actually never finished the program. I am now in the process of being promoted to a position that requires an advanced degree. I am not sure as to what I should do- continue with the lie, risk being fired, get passed over for the promotion or come clean.

Surely, if you continue with the lie, you will be found out and therefore fired. You have several options; you can withdraw your name from the applicant list. This will give you some time finish the degree. However, if you are required to show the degree, the construction employer will notice the date of completion. So, you are left with one option. - Be honest and talk to your boss. Beg for mercy and forgiveness and explain the situation. If it helps, enroll in the 3 classes now and let your boss know that you are currently enrolled and expect to finish in 6 months. Pay the piper and I can assure that you will be better off. If not, the situation may come up again soon.
