Should I ever tell an interviewer I'll work for free on a trial basis?

When changing construction career paths or when you are truly desperate for work, you might consider such an extreme measure, but be very careful. Consider your position carefully. You are setting a precedent with your new construction employer. If you start out working for free, how will that factor into your compensation package when they begin to develop it?
