For many companies, this past year’s economic slump has taken its toll on employee morale. In a recent Construction Executive survey, 34% of executives interviewed said they felt frustrated with the way their current employer was handling layoffs and addressing company morale. As a retention strategy to guard against executive departures when the economy rebounds, employers should improve the work-life benefits for employees by increasing communication and feedback with management, offering more flex time, job autonomy, training and education programs, child and elder care, personalizing the work place so that it is more suitable to the employee’s preferences, and improving the general quality of employee job responsibilities by expanding duties into new and challenging areas.
