Is it appropriate to ask for a sign-on bonus?

Professionally speaking, I think it's totally inappropriate to ask for a sign-on bonus, let alone ask for a specific amount.  Sign-on bonuses are offered but they are never requested!  The purpose of a sign-on bonus is an added inducement to a construction executive to take a job that's been offered.  They're usually reserved for construction executives the construction employer really wants to hire.
